Maison Perrier-Jouët 1874 vintage sets a new auction record for a bottle of champagne sold at Christie’s

December, 2021

On 2 and 3 December 2021, Christie’s held its “Finest and Rarest Wines & Spirits” auction in London, during which Maison Perrier-Jouët offered a selection of exceptional champagnes. The Perrier-Jouët 1874 vintage achieved £42,875, setting a new auction record for a bottle of champagne sold at Christie’s.

The Perrier-Jouët 1874 had previously set a record when it was sold at Christie’s in 1888 and became the most expensive champagne sold at auction at the time.

The auction represented a tremendous success for Maison Perrier-Jouët, with all the lots on offer reaching notable prices, exceeding the estimates and the trends for the champagne market.

For the first time in its history, Maison Perrier-Jouët opened the doors of its Oenothèque, its cellared reserve of exceptional vintages, to release the selection for the Christie’s “Finest and Rarest Wines & Spirits” auction, as part of a two-year collaboration between Maison Perrier-Jouët and Christie’s.

Séverine Frerson, Maison Perrier-Jouët Cellar Master:

“I am very proud to see how Maison Perrier-Jouët’s unique wine legacy has been recognised and celebrated by wine lovers at Christie’s. I am looking forward to meeting the buyer of the Perrier-Jouët 1874 vintage in Epernay, France, where they will have the opportunity to continue this remarkable experience at the Maison Belle Epoque, the historic home of our founders.”

Tim Triptree MW, International Director, Christie’s Wine & Spirits Department:

“Christie’s are delighted with the sale of Historic Vintages direct from Maison Perrier-Jouët with all of the lots selling. In the London sale we experienced competitive bidding resulting in impressive prices – particularly for the bottle of 1874 and magnums of 1979 Belle Époque, which doubled their high estimates. The whole collection performed above expectations, which is testament to the high reputation of the Maison and the demand for finest and rarest vintages of Champagne with perfect provenance.”
